Old metal wall ties commonly came in the form of a strip of metal with a black bitumen or zinc coating. Over the years it as become apparent that these ties were insufficiently treated. Owing to this the ties start to corrode. Deterioration of cavity wall ties is a widespread problem to walls throughout the UK, particularly in exposed areas or in walls of particular construction and with specific mortar types. The corrosion of cavity wall ties can lead to horizontal and stepped cracking to brickwork, bulging of brickwork and in more severe cases the external leaf of brickwork has been known to collapse.

In a lot of properties the failure of the wall ties as resulted in major repair bills for property owners. On older properties the wall ties used were wrought iron or mild steel and had no protection against corrosion. As a result problems such as bulging walls, cracking of mortar courses, water ingress and in severe cases collapse of external walls can occur.

To address the problem of wall tie corrosion, new stainless steel wall ties are installed into the cavity wall with spacings laid down by the British Standard Institute B. S. 5628 code. The replacement cavity wall ties are of a mechanical or resin fixing depending on the type and condition of brickwork attached to. The wall ties are installed from the outside and the installation holes are made good with coloured mortars.
